A Bit About Me
I am a clinical mental health counseling and sport & human performance master’s student at Adler University and I’m excited about working with individuals to reach their highest potential. I identify as a queer black woman and athlete who is passionate about counseling individuals from diverse backgrounds. I have experience working with adolescents, adults, and older adults through community and athletic work in the Chicago area. My goal is to make the therapeutic space welcoming to all identities and challenge people when necessary to meet their goals. My approach is always client centered and pulls from cognitive behavioral therapy, narrative therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy. As a counselor, I focus on helping clients embark on their journey of self-discovery and problem solving. I practice standing side-by-side with individuals and using their lived experience as expertise while providing guidance through my training to illuminate what’s there.
I am originally from Washington, D.C. and have a Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I am an athlete, a cat mom and when not in the office I crochet, embroider, and love to travel.
Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I’ve been informally called to counseling my entire life and experiences in high performance environments have led me to formally enter into the mental health field. My friends, family, and even strangers describe me as an empathetic person who listens, tries to understand things from different world-views, and pushes individuals to acknowledge and overcome challenges in their lives. My intersecting identities have pushed me to be the representation needed in this field with an intent to address low help seeking behaviors for minority communities, the lack of accessible resources, and to be a grounding presence for my clients.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am excited to work with clients who have an open mind about what therapy can be. I am especially passionate about working with BIPOC, the LGBTQIA+ community, and athletes or those who enjoy moving their bodies.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
That counseling is for everyone regardless of background or time of life. Therapy is for those struggling, those who feel content, those who feel immense joy, those who want to work through the past, those who are looking towards the future, those who are only able to process the present, and all experiences or goals in between. It is cathartic to have someone to talk to, process things, and develop new skills in a space designed for them to feel comfortable being vulnerable, which is brave in a world that can feel overwhelming.
Why did you choose to practice at Ashe Counseling & Coaching LLC
I chose Ashe because of their dedication to providing care to a wider range of people through the community clinic, commitment to diversity, and dedication to destigmatizing the therapeutic space.
